The White House has recently revealed the appointment of distinguished MIT Professor Daniela Rus, who leads the prestigious Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), to the influential President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).
This distinguished advisory body delivers crucial guidance to the administration on matters vital to national security and economic prosperity. Their expertise shapes policy recommendations concerning the evolution of employment landscape, maintaining America's competitive edge in technological innovation, and advancing the nation's research and development initiatives.
Functioning under the umbrella of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), which was formally established through legislation in 1976, PCAST carries forward a legacy of scientific counsel that traces its origins to Franklin D. Roosevelt's Science Advisory Board formed in 1933.
"I am honored to contribute my computational expertise to this distinguished council during a pivotal era when artificial intelligence and various computing domains present profound scientific and policy challenges that impact both our nation and global community," Professor Rus expressed with enthusiasm.
Holding the prestigious Andrew and Erna Viterbi Professorship in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at MIT, Rus also serves as the deputy dean of research for the MIT Stephen A. Schwarzman College of Computing. Her groundbreaking research spans robotics, artificial intelligence, and data science, with a primary focus on advancing the theoretical foundations and practical implementations of autonomous systems. This distinguished group includes former MIT President Charles Vest; Institute Professors Phillip Sharp and John Deutch; Ernest Moniz, physics professor and former U.S. Secretary of Energy; and Eric Lander, biology professor and director of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, who co-chaired PCAST during the Obama administration. Historically, these councils have provided invaluable insights on diverse subjects ranging from data protection protocols and nanotechnology innovations to workforce development strategies and STEM educational initiatives.
